I have been reviewing our current scoring system for the past few months and overall I am fairly satisfied with what we have.
There are a few changes that I have been considering making and they have been implemented today.
A large number of the changes are to correct a few scoring loopholes in the punting and returning averages that could possibly cause incorrect scoring.
I also increased the max value amount for a lot of the scorable items (TDs, Sacks, etc.) to ensure no stats went unscored (if your player set a record for TDs in a game then you should get points for every one of those TDs!).
I have also addressed the issue of First Down scoring. This is an issue that I was already concerned with and the recent discourse on the subject only served to validate my worries.
Here are the major changes for this season:
1. Point values have been added for Punt Yardage Average, Punt Return Average & Kick Return Average of 99.1 to 100+ yds.
Since there were no define scoring values for averages over 99 yds, it was possible for a player to return a single kickoff or punt for more than 99yds in a game (which would result in an average of more than 99 yds) and not receive any points for those return yards.
2. KRs will now receive points for any TDs or 2pt conversions they may score within the game.
The most influential contribution a player can make in real or fantasy football is a score, be it offensive, defensive or special teams. Our scoring system should reflect this as well.
3. Passing 1st Downs are worth .5 pts each. Rushing & Receiving 1st Downs are 1 pt each.
This scoring is universal so if a QB pulls down the ball and takes off for the marker, he gets the full point for the 1st. A full point per Passing 1st down was resulting in too many skewed point totals. This should result in an average per game point drop of 7 to 9 points for QBs.
4. Passing Completions are worth .2 pts each.
Completions are a more direct contribution from a QB than 1st downs so they should be represented better. However, with an QB completing 20-22 passes per game, the increase from the former .1 pts per completion needed to be a small one. On average this should result in a scoring increase of 2-4 points.
