HAMBURG, Germany (AP) - Racine Legion fans woke to bitter news while Germans throughout the world united in excitement-- Racine's beloved team is moving Germany. Team Owner and GM Richard Marens made the controversial announcement to an outcry of pleas, threats and despair just moments after league approval.
Departing their Wisconsin base, the franchise is moving to Marens' childhood home of Hamburg, Germany. Adding insult to injury, the team is being renamed to the Sea Devils- a homage to the city's famous port and nautical history. Known as the "Gateway to the World," Hamburg boasts the world's fifteenth largest port and will now play host to football fans from across the globe.
Founded in 2009 as the Arizona Cardinals during the league's inaugural season, the franchise posted a strong 8-4 record. Dreams were shattered in the desert, however, as the team was relocated to Racine, WI soon after where it spent the next three years compiling a respectable 22-14 record (8-4, 8-4, 6-6). "A move to Europe was a long-term dream," said Marens. "We simply could not pass up the opportunity when the league announced its plans for overseas expansion."
When asked about the difficulties of a European-based franchise, Marens responded with optimism, confidently stating his belief that other franchises would join the Sea Devils in growing the sport's, the league's popularity overseas. The Hamburg Sea Devils will begin the 2013 season as the first franchise based outside of the league's native United States- "...but not the last," claims Richard Marens.
Once known as "the most interesting man in the TDL," Richard Marens has shed his self-appointed title, instead anointing the Hamburg Sea Devils as "the most interesting team in the world."
Hamburger SV, the city's prominent professional soccer club, has already pledged its full support. Sources report an unconfirmed meeting between the Sea Devils and HSV brain trusts- likely a joint venture in cross-promotion and a mutual interest in continuing the city's growth as a professional sports power. City streets are buzzing with excitement as Hamburg embraces it's own professional football team. "Fucking geil!" shouted an enthusiastic teenager donning his makeshift Kuechly Sea Devils jersey and raising his hand to the sky- devil horns.
In related news, Marens has declared March 23nd as Devils Day- a day commemorating TDL's first European franchise. Germany's punk legends Die Toten Hosen are rumored to highlight the Sea Devils' inaugural home game celebrations.
