Clarification of contract extensions
There has been an ongoing issue with the extension of contracts that are already 5 years in length. Our current contract system allows for the maximum contract length of 5yrs and the yearly ability to extend contracts allows a GM to add up to 2 additional years to the length of a player's contract.
The system is fairly straightforward until a GM wishes to extend the contract of a player who is already under a 5 yr contract. There have been multiple workarounds used to make the contract information work, but there has been no concrete procedure in place or one that remains as straightforward as the rest of the extension process.
So going forward, the maximum length of time a player can be under a single contract is 5yrs.
Once the length of a player's contract reaches 5 yrs, they cannot be extended and must play out the remainder of their contract and become RFAs, requiring resigning or release into Unrestricted Free Agency.
Players under contracts less than 5yrs in length may be extended as usual, but their contract length cannot be extended past 5yrs.
This clarification does not affect salary re-negotiation, contract reduction or contract buyouts in any way. This should put an end to the cotract errors I have come across as well as help solidify the long-term viability of our Free Agency market.
Since I am sure you have all been making plans for the coming season, this will not take effect until the 2014 season. That means that 5yr contracts will be allowed to be extended, with a couple of specifics:
1) When extending a 5yr contract, please record the new contract length as 6 or 7 years, depending on the length of extension you choose.
2) An extended contract can only have a maximum of 5 active years of player salary.
This may throw a wrench in some long term plans, but the next order of business should help teams retain their most important RFAs moving forward.
New Contract Type
This year we are introducing a new contract type:
Type F- The Franchise Contract
This is a special contract type that allows GMs to lock up priority Free Agents to long term deals at affordable salaries.
Each season during the RFA Resigning period, A GM can sign one RFA to a Type F contract.
Type F Contract details:
- this contract type is a 5yr contract
- player's salary increases by +$1 to current base salary
- there are no yearly salary bonuses so the cost of th eplayer remains the same every year
- signing a player to a Type F contract does not count against the current resigning contract quota (currently 9), effectively giving GMs the ability to resign up to 10 of their RFAs each year
Restrictions:
- Type F contracts cannot be renegotiated, extended, or reduced. A Type F contract player plays out their contract at their normal salary unless the current owning GM decides to buy-out the player's remaining contract. Buyouts of Type F contracts function like a normal buyout.
