Now that we are entering the contract restructure/renegotiation phase of the offseason, here are a few notes to help with questions you may have.
If you have a question or are unsure how to proceed, please PM or email me.
CONTRACT RENEGOTIATIONS
This is the simpler of the two so I take care of it first.
From the Rules Section:
This is pretty straightforward. Remember that a player must be under contract to qualify for a Renegotiation. You can't use your Renegotiations on an RFA.
Practice Squad Players are eligible for Salary Renegotiation.
You cannot reduce a player's salary below $1.
CONTRACT RESTRUCTURES
NOTE: Make sure to read the Clarification note at the end of this section—it contains important information about future contract renegotiations.
From the Rules Section:
Remember that you are modifying the LENGTH of the contract, not the YEARS IN. If your player is 2yrs in on a 5yr Type A contract and you reduce his contract by 2yrs, then he would be 2yrs in on a 3yr Type A contract. You can also extend a player's contract up to 2 yrs (to a max length of 5yrs).
You can You can use a Restructure and a Renegotiation on the same player if you wish. You cannot reduce a player's salary to less than $1.
Remember to update your salary and contract information on your roster posts as you make these restructures and renegotiations.
Clarification of contract extensions
There has been an ongoing issue with the extension of contracts that are already 5 years in length. Our current contract system allows for the maximum contract length of 5yrs and the yearly ability to extend contracts allows a GM to add up to 2 additional years to the length of a player's contract.
The system is fairly straightforward until a GM wishes to extend the contract of a player who is already under a 5 yr contract. There have been multiple workarounds used to make the contract information work, but there has been no concrete procedure in place or one that remains as straightforward as the rest of the extension process.
So going forward, the maximum length of time a player can be under a single contract is 5yrs.
Once the length of a player's contract reaches 5 yrs, they cannot be extended and must play out the remainder of their contract and become RFAs, requiring resigning or release into Unrestricted Free Agency.
Players under contracts less than 5yrs in length may be extended as usual, but their contract length cannot be extended past 5yrs.
This clarification does not affect salary re-negotiation, contract reduction or contract buyouts in any way. This should put an end to the cotract errors I have come across as well as help solidify the long-term viability of our Free Agency market.
Since I am sure you have all been making plans for the coming season, this will not take effect until the 2014 season. That means that 5yr contracts will be allowed to be extended, with a couple of specifics:
1) When extending a 5yr contract, please record the new contract length as 6 or 7 years, depending on the length of extension you choose.
2) An extended contract can only have a maximum of 5 active years of player salary.
3) Any years added to contract length beyond 5 will be at the player's Base Salary, regardless of contract type.
If you have a question or are unsure how to proceed, please PM or email me.

From the Rules Section:
Salary Re-negotiation
Each season every owner can reduce the Base Cost of two players (one on Offense & one on Defense) by $1. The players must have completed at least 1 Year of their contract and have at least 1 year of active contract service remaining.

From the Rules Section:
Restructuring Players (Active Roster)
Each Season, every Owner will have the opportunity to restructure four of their player's contracts (2 on Offense & 2 on Defense). One and only one (per each side of the ball) restructure can be used to increase a player's contract length and the other (per each side of the ball) can only be used to decrease the contract length.
The contract extension restructuring can be used on any player's contract by increasing it up to 2 Years beyond what they have remaining (must have a minimum of 1 Year Remaining and a max of 3 Years Remaining). This will in practice have them re-sign and start that contract at the same number of "Years In" with your team. However, whatever contract Type the players previously had must be maintained (See Contract Post for more details).
The contract retraction restructuring can be used on any player's contract to short it by 1-2 Year (must have a minimum of 2-3 Years Remaining). This will in practice have them re-sign and start contract at the same number of "Years In" with your team. However, whatever contract Type the player perviously had must be maintained (See Contract Post for more details).
